La fin du monde commence avec l'apocalypse silencieuse. The Long Dark est un jeu de survie et d'exploration à la première personne, sans zombies ni robots tueurs. Au lieu de cela, vous affrontez le rude hiver canadien, luttant pour survivre seul dans un environnement froid et hostile.

The Long Dark propose un rythme lent et méditatif, mais le danger est bien réel. Chaque jour, vous devez maintenir vos réserves de nourriture et d'eau, vous reposer suffisamment et rester au chaud. Vous devez explorer votre environnement pour trouver, rassembler et chasser ce dont vous avez besoin. Vous devez combattre des loups sauvages, des ours et d'autres créatures qui peuvent vous chasser. Le jeu comporte un mode histoire dans lequel vous jouez alternativement le pilote Will McKenzie et sa femme, le Dr Astrid Greenwood. Lorsqu'une mystérieuse tempête géomagnétique fait s'écraser l'avion de Will, ils doivent explorer les étendues sauvages de Bear Island, au Canada, et se retrouver.

Dans le mode Survie, vous tentez de vivre le plus longtemps possible dans la nature, en évitant de mourir de faim, de soif, d'attaques d'animaux, de maladies et du froid glacial. Explorez 11 régions différentes, allant d'une ville abandonnée à une commune agricole, en passant par un barrage hydroélectrique, une vallée fluviale tranquille ou un sommet de montagne aride. Gérez des ressources essentielles comme l'eau potable et le bois de chauffage. Récupérez des armes comme le pistolet ou le fusil, ou fabriquez votre propre arc et votre propre hache. Créez des équipements d'hiver à partir de peaux d'animaux ou fouillez dans les maisons inhabitées pour trouver des vêtements.

Les vestiges de la civilisation s'offrent à vous si vous êtes capable de braver la longue obscurité.
